The High Priestess Tarot
What is the High Priestess Tarot
The High Priestess is the second card in a suit of twenty-two cards, called the trumps or the Major Arcana in a traditional 78-card tarot deck. Also known as Persephone, Isis, the Corn Maiden and Artemis, it is used both in game playing as well as in divination. The ruling planet of the High Priestess is the Moon and her element is water.
How is the High Priestess in the Tarot Card Depicted
The High Priestess, wearing a blue robe, sits before a tapestry, suspended between 2 pillars, one black, and the other white. She wears a headdress, (the crown of Isis) with a big globe in its center, and at her feet rests a golden crescent moon. She holds the sacred Torah scroll and there is a white cross on her chest. The tapestry is decorated with patterns of pomegranates and there are 2 letters on each of the pillars, the black one has “B”, while the white has “J”.
What Does the High Priestess Stand for in the Tarot Card
The High Priestess symbolizing wisdom and understanding, urges you to do what you feel right. The blue robe and the half-concealed Torah of the Priestess symbolize knowledge, her headdress stands for wisdom, and the Grecian solar cross indicates how such an insight can be gained by following the best of traditions. The two pillars are of King Solomon’s temple, symbolizing darkness and light; the letter, “B” standing for “Boaz”, roughly signifies the completion os something, while “J” for “Jachin” symbolizes a new beginning.
The High Priestess in the middle accordingly stresses her role as a mediator between two extremes; she appears as a mystical figure knowledgeable of the depths of reality. The pomegranates on the tapestry stand for duty and the palm suggests the fertility of imagination. The moon at her left feet embodies control over pure intuition and the cube on which she is seated represents earth.
